Review: 2nd CRC Days in Brno

Colorectal Cancer Care – Politics and Gastroenterology work hand in hand!

Prof. Reinhold Stockbrugger, Chairman of the Public Affairs Committee, United European Gastroenterology (UEG)
For the second year in line, the European Colorectal Cancer Days (ECCD) were organized in Brno, the second largest and historically very important city of the Czech Republic (CZ). The meeting - the idea of which was born during a close collaboration between the MEP RnDr Pavel Poc and the United European Gastroenterology (UEG) during the campaign for the Written Declaration 68/2010 in the “Fight against Colorectal Cancer” - was held from April 26-27, 2013. It was very well attended by a considerable number of European, national and local politicians, healthcare responsible, patient representatives, scientists and physicians (mainly gastroenterologists) from 16 European countries and from Israel.
The location of the conference had originally - in 2012 - been chosen because of the achievements of the Institute of Biostatistics and Analyses of the Masaryk University (Brno) and his utterly productive and internationally orientated director, Prof. Ladislav Dusek, both amongst many other tasks working on centralized national and international registration and reporting of the epidemiology of malignant diseases, in particular their management, outcome and prevention.
The main topics of this year’s ECCD were the progress of the Czech programme for CRC screening after the decisions taken at last year’s meeting and the further exploration of modes of collaboration between politicians, healthcare organizers and gastroenterological as well as oncological specialists in the fight against CRC. Invitations to the meeting had been especially addressed to potentially interested persons from countries in the South-East of Europe, which is the macro-region with the highest incidence and mortality of colorectal and other cancers and which is actively searching for advice and support from the European Union, … and to some extent also from the United European Gastroenterology.
UEG was delighted to be able to organize a pre-conference workshop on pre-conditions, organization, execution and outcome control of CRC screening with outstanding specialist from its national and scientific organizations (Prof. Nurdan Tözün/Turkey, Prof. Luigi Ricciardiello/Italy, Prof. Monique van Leerdam/Netherlands, Dr.s Mirjana Kalauz and Natasa Antoljak/ Croatia and Prof. Bohumil Seifert/Czech Republic). The workshop was very well attended and interactivity was the golden thread of the discussions. The “real life” scenarios of the workshop gave an ideal background to the more theoretical discussions further on in the meeting.
The main-conference was initiated by a video-message from the EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, Dr. Tonio Borg from Malta, who stressed the importance of reaching a EU-wide CRC screening as soon as possible, the scientists’ and clinicians’ role in it, and the politicians ultimate responsibility for the success. The role of primary prevention of cancer by healthy lifestyle had the special attention in the Commissioner’s elaborations.
During the following whole day, in the main presentations and discussions, leading members of political structures, health administrations, medical and information specialist, key stakeholders of ONGs, private and public institutions, as well as representatives of national medical and patient organizations had the opportunity to explain their needs regarding CRC prevention and to illustrate their present and future approaches. It was an enormously uniting sensation to take part in experiences reported from Russia, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Turkey, Croatia, Austria, Hungary and – indeed – the Czech Republic.
The final two sessions were filled by the exemplary and fortunately very successful Czech experiences in the field, comfortably made available to the international attendees by excellent simultaneous translations to English.
The conclusions formulated at various points during the meeting seemed to be unanimously accepted by the political, medical and community components of the audience were:

CRC screening is necessary for humanitarian, healthcare and political reasons and will be successful if all partners work hand in hand such as was demonstrated in this meeting

Regarding cancer prevention, the EU and UEG should pay special attention to the needing members, especially in the South-East of the continent

Apart from humanitarian gain, there is knowledge and even money to be earned in this joint effort

Conferences like the Brno European Colorectal Cancer Days form a classical example for the excitement given by multi-national and multi-professional interaction for an intelligent aim

The EU would – like the USA – be served by a European Cancer Institute (ECI) that – as the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda/Maryland /US – would invest all possible human and financial resources to fight this increasing plague of our continent, colorectal cancer

It was highly recommended that such an institution should be placed where the problem appears to be biggest, in the South-East part of the EU.

HEG has turned one

20 years after the first UEG Week was held in Athens, UEG took several important steps to reflect...

On the last weekend of April 2012, the House of European Gastroenterology (HEG) opened doors for the first time to become a meeting place for the European gastroenterology community.
The inauguration event also saw the unveiling UEG’s new corporate identity: Until then known as UEGF, our organisation is now UEG, has a new logo and visual approach, which can be experienced on all our channels of communication. This allows us to better reflect the quality and authority of our work in creating a world renowned scientific programme, organising excellent educational activities, or staying at the top of the political agenda in Brussels.
It’s been a year now and UEG did not stay idle. Only in February 2013 we launched UEG Journal, our official platform for research in GI. Watch out for next issues to come!
