Continuing Medical Education

UEG, the UEMS Section of Gastroenterology and the UEMS European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (EBGH), collaborate on the EACCME accreditation process (European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education).

The purpose is to guarantee an adequate control mechanism for European scientific standards and to enhance postgraduate teaching activities.

The purpose of the EACCME, seated in Brussels, is the harmonisation and improvement of the quality of specialist medical care in Europe.

The EACCME ensures accessibility to quality medical education and professional development activities, securing European exchange of CME credits for medical specialists in Europe.

The council was established by the Management Council of the UEMS at the October meeting in 1999 in Vienna and started to operate in January 2000.

European Union of Medical Specialists

The European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) was established over 45 years ago and is the political representative organisation for medical specialists in the European Union and associated countries.

It defines the basic principles in the field of training of European medical specialists with a view to achieving a comparably high level of knowledge among medical specialists of the European countries and thereby allowing free movement of specialists from one member country to another.

Specialist sections for each of the main disciplines practiced in the member states have been created to coordinate and harmonise the specialist training and elaborate the criteria for the recognition of medical specialists. With successive enlargements of the European community, the number of specialist sections has gradually increased to 37.

The UEMS has created “European Boards”, working groups of the specialist sections, to guarantee optimal care in the specialty concerned by developing the training of medical specialists to the highest level possible.
