Hands-on programme

Endoscopy

The Endoscopy Hands-on Programme is run in cooperation with ESGE and ESGENA.

The Endoscopy Hands-on Programme provides a unique opportunity for skill enhancement, first-class learning, and professional discourse at no additional costs.

Test your skills under the guidance of expert doctor and nurse tutors with the use of accessories from leading providers. View educational films from the ESGE eLibrary or partner societies at your leisure.  

The Endoscopy Hands-on Schedule will be available in June and will include sessions on, EMR, ERCP, ESD, EUS, hemostasis, polypectomy, etc.

Pre-registration for Saturday – Monday programme opens on Monday, October 7, 2024 at 10:00 CEST via a link on this website. (Closes Thursday, October 10, 2024 at 23:59 CEST.)

Limited spots are available, and participation is based on a first-come, first-served basis and does not involve any extra costs in addition to your registration for UEG Week and/or PGT.

Pre-registered participants must pick up their ticket for their booked timeslot(s) onsite at the Welcome Desk in the Endoscopy Area minimum 5 minutes before the start of their hands-on session(s). Otherwise, the spot will be lost.

It is possible to check onsite at the Hands-on Endoscopy welcome desk whether spots have freed up, again at a first-come, first-served basis.

Who can participate? 

Any medical professional with a PGT and/or Week registration except for Undergraduate Students and Industry Representatives.

With a PGT-only registration you can participate only in hands-on sessions taking place during the running times of the PGT programme.

Once the Endoscopy Hands-on Programme will be available, the included procedure descriptions will also contain information about what level of experience is required for each topic.

How many hands-on sessions can you register for?
Each person can register for one endoscopy hands-on session in total.

The Ultrasound hands-on programme is run in cooperation with EFSUMB and BICUS.
 

Ultrasonography for gastroenterologists! 
The Ultrasound Hands-on Programme promotes the role of a major diagnostic and interventional tool in gastroenterology: Clinical ultrasonography in the hands of the gastroenterologist.  
It offers basic and postgraduate courses on ultrasonography, individual hands-on training and special lectures in abdominal ultrasonography at no extra costs. The programme is designed for both young and senior gastroenterologists with or without experience in ultrasonography.  

No online pre-registration is required.
Limited spots are available, and participation is based on a first-come, first-served basis on-site and does not involve any extra costs in addition to your registration for UEG Week and/or PGT.

Workshops

Emergency Training in Endoscopy

Saturday, October 12, 2024 | 09:00 – 15:00 CEST OR Sunday, October 13, 2024 | 09:00 – 15:00 CEST

A course run in cooperation with the LMU Munich institute for emergency medicine. 

This workshop is targeted to endoscopists and endoscopy nurses who are regularly performing endoscopic procedures together. The high-quality training in small groups conducted by the experienced training institute of LMU Munich aims to increase the confidence of participants in handling potential emergencies and provide life support in the endoscopy unit. Participation is possible through application only.

The course will take place twice during UEG Week. Applicants must choose between Saturday and Sunday during the application.

Course structure
Participants will be split in groups of 6 and pass through the following workshop parts:

  • Interactive seminar: Structured approach to emergencies, extended resuscitation measures, Crisis Resource Management (CRM)
  • Hands-on training in basic life support 
  • Simulation training in teams on emergencies in the endoscopy suite
Online application (mandatory)

Application criteria

  • Only applications in pairs will be accepted. Pairs must consist of an endoscopist and an endoscopy nurse who are regularly performing endoscopic procedures together in the same institute. One person applies for both during the application process.
  • One letter of support by the head of the institute’s gastroenterology department (or endoscopy unit, etc) where both applicants work at must be provided during the application process. It is mandatory to use the UEG letter template only. Other letters not following the template will not be accepted.
  • Applicants must have performed a minimum of 300 gastroscopies and 100 colonoscopies at the time of application.
  • Applicants must have good English skills that allow them to follow the content and engage actively during the workshop.

Applicants will be notified in the beginning of June and accepted participants will have to register for UEG Week by July 15 (registration for early bird fee will be available). Selected participants who don’t register by this deadline will lose their spot.

Selection 
Only very limited spots are available. The selection of participating pairs will be done at the discretion of the Scientific Committee taking country, gender and age balance into consideration and cannot be revoked.

Endoanal Ultrasound

Sunday, October 13, 2024 | 09:00 – 16:00 CEST

Aimed for all physicians who are involved or interested in pelvic floor disorders.

This course that was developed by experts from ESSAT and ESCP is designed to give participants an overview of the techniques and image interpretation of anorectal and pelvic floor ultrasound (US). But also, to let them understand the potential roles of US in improving the diagnosis and management of anorectal and pelvic floor dysfunction.  The course is divided into a theoretical part incl. case presentations in the morning and the interpretation of images as well as practical hands-on exercises on stations with various pathologies in the afternoon. 
Spots are limited and participants can pre-register online and are requested to attend the course in its entirety.

Gastroenterologist-Surgeon collaboration 

Monday, October 14, 2024 | Lower GI 09:30 – 11:00 CEST, Upper GI 11:30 – 13:00 CEST, HPB 14:00 – 15:30 CEST

Interdisciplinary, case-based and interactive workshop on common clinical problems to optimse patient care.

These three 1.5 hours workshops are aimed for all gastroenterologists who are closely collaborating with surgeons. This interactive, case-based course is designed to give participants all information they need to tell their surgeon to optimise patient care and collaboration for various GI pathologies and treatment options. Topic wise, each of the three sessions will focus on a different area within gastroenterology (Lower GI, Upper GI, HPB). The course is organised by ESSAT surgeons and GI specialists.

Learning objectives
Basic knowledge of:

  • the pre-operative work up for various diagnoses in the GI tract. 
  • the information the surgeon needs to decide on the next treatment plan. 
  • the rationale of surgical decision-making.
  • the most common challenges surgeons face in patients referred by gastroenterologists; tips, tricks and pitfall avoidance.
